You can have all the training sessions and challenge matches that you want, but the cut and thrust of championship football is a whole new ball game – especially when you’re a young teenager experiencing competitive inter-county action for the very first time.

That was the situation at Austin Stack Park on Tuesday night for the Kerry and Cork minors, and while the slippery ground conditions, and the enormity of the occasion, didn’t lead to a classic game, Kingdom boss Wayne Quillinan was satisfied to kick off with a two-point quarter-final victory.
