Irish Ferries said it has reached a deal with P&O Ferries to make freight and passenger space available to one another on their Dover-Calais route.

Irish Ferries, which is owned by Irish Continental Group, said the deal will enhance its service by shortening customer waiting times and improving the flow of traffic on what it called this vital trade and connection route to the EU.

“This agreement is designed to ensure the resilience of the route, improve connectivity, and reduce potential port congestion,” the company said.

It said it expects the agreement to come into effect for its freight customers in the summer who will benefit from the advantages of a turn up and go service.

This will then be followed on a phased basis for its passenger business, it added.

“The agreement will increase both our efficiency on the route and will result in great flexibility and more choice for all our customers. Whilst the agreement means that capacity is shared, all commercial activities remain entirely under the control of each operator,” Irish Ferries added.
