US healthcare service company announces 100 jobs in Limerick

A US healthcare service company has announced 100 jobs in Limerick.

Carelon Global Solutions in Ireland, said the new jobs at the Irish R&D hub will bring the total number of workers to 320 by the end of 2024.

This will be three years after the launch of its IDA supported Innovation Centre at the National Technology Park in Limerick.

The company said the recruitment on this latest round of expansion has already begun.

It added that positions available are across Product Management, Data Analysis, Data Science, Data Engineering, Dev Ops, Cyber Security, Agile Operations, Quality Engineering, Architecture, Front End and Back End Engineering.

Chief Operating Officer at Carelon and President at Carelon Global Solutions Rajat Puri said:

“We launched in Ireland in late 2021 seeking to tap into the rich R&D ecosystem here to help solve the challenges to achieving full and complete care, and our Irish operations are contributing very positively to this aim. We’ve steadily grown our presence and activities here and today is a statement of our intent to continue to grow our exceptional talent pool in Ireland.”

Carelon Global Solutions Ireland Chief Country Executive John Shaw said the company set out ‘with an intention to assemble in Ireland a diverse and talented team of health tech innovators’.

“That’s what our team is doing on a day-to-day basis,” he said.

Mr Shaw said that the company is committed to ‘not alone building a team with cutting edge skills but one that reflects diversity and inclusiveness’.

“To that end, over 60% of the team is ‘new Irish’, drawn from 32 nations, with a 48% to 52% female to male gender split and a target of achieving gender equality by year end,” he said.

Voluntary redundancies proposed as part of deal to re-open Tara Mines

A proposed agreement has been negotiated on 16 April at the Workplace Relations Commission in an attempt to deal with the Tara Mines dispute.

In June 2023, Boliden, the metals company that owns Tara Mines in Co Meath announced that production would temporarily cease at its Navan plant, meaning 650 employees would be ‘temporarily laid off’.

Boliden said due to a combination of factors, the Tara Mines in Ireland would be placed under ‘care and maintenance’.

In January 2024, workers were asked by management to express their interest in a proposed voluntary severance scheme.

However, trade union Unite – which represents craft and staff grades at Tara Mines – expressed ‘outrage’ at the proposals advanced by the company.

Voluntary redundancies

Unite said that the proposed agreement negotiated in April at the WRC represents a ‘significant improvement’ on the scheme proposed by Boliden in January.

The union said that, if the agreement is accepted by a ballot of workers, the company ‘must commit to the long-term future of Tara Mines’.

Reports suggest that over 150 jobs could go in redundancies as part of a proposed deal to reopen the mines.

Union said the proposed agreement stipulates that ‘all redundancies will be voluntary where they arise’, and unions have ‘secured redundancy terms of five weeks per year of service capped at two years’.

According to Unite, the voluntary severance process is expected to take approximately one month.

Unite regional officer Brian Hewitt said:

“Notwithstanding the improved terms secured by unions, the voluntary redundancies envisaged in the proposed agreement represent a major blow to workers and the local economy. Unions have succeeded in protecting the core pay of the remaining workforce and Unite will be working in the coming weeks to maximise bonuses and productivity payments for our members.”

“If the agreement is accepted by workers, we would urge Boliden to set a firm date for the re-opening to be completed, and to give workers an assurance that the company is committed to Tara Mines’ long-term future,” added Mr Hewitt.

Health services company to create 100 jobs in Galway over next few years

Evernorth Health Services has announced it is to locate a new innovation hub in Galway City, creating 100 jobs over the next few years.

The company said employees with Evernorth Ireland will be ‘engaged in software strategy, architecture, and portfolio and product management of select technology products across The Cigna Group and its businesses’.

Evernorth added it will recruit ‘top talent, from graduates to experienced technology professionals, across a range of roles in Ireland’.

This project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Dara Calleary said ‘investments such as this one continue to advance Galway’s position, in particular, as a global technology hub’.

Luke Warren, Head of Evernorth Ireland, said:

“We selected Galway as a hub because we believe it will help us drive further innovation on behalf of all those we serve. We look forward to deepening our engagement with the Galway community and benefiting from new viewpoints as we deliver on our promises to our stakeholders.”

Evernorth Ireland said it has a temporary office at the Hibernian House in Eyre Square and is now recruiting for positions.
