The death has taken place of former Meath GAA star of the 1960s Tom Brown, Knockanina, Mountrath, Co Laois and formerly Enfield.
Tom (ex-An Garda Siochana) lived in Co Laois for many years and was associated with the O’Dempsey’s and Emo clubs but was a native of Enfield and played with the south-Meath club before transferring to Laois. He lined out at midfield for the Royal county in the 1966 All-Ireland final loss to Galway.
He had earlier won his second Leinster SFC medal when playing at centre-forward in the 1-9 to 1-8 final victory over Kildare. Tom played a starring role for Meath that day scoring four crucial points.
Tom was 27-years-old when he won a Railway Cup medal in 1964 and later that year was on the ’40 as Meath bridged a 10-year gap with a Leinster final win over then All-Ireland champions Dublin.
It was Meath’s ninth provincial final success, winning on a 2-12 to 1-7 scoreline against a Dublin team that included the likes of Des and Lar Foley, Mickey Whelan and Des ‘Snitchy’ Ferguson.
Tom, who was also a talented golfer, was predeceased by his son, David. He is survived by his wife, Phil, sons, Alan and Colin, daughter-in-law Deirdre, grandchildren, Robert, Sophie and Jack, brother, Joe, sisters, Mary and Róisín, and extended family.
His funeral mass took place on Monday in St Edmund’s Church, Castletown (Laois) with interment afterwards in Churchtown Cemetery, Castletown.
