Growing up in Limerick we had a little dairy farm where I helped out. I had five siblings and as the third son my prospects for the farm were not good.

I thought I wanted to be a teacher. I did a couple of years of an English and PE degree in UL before joining the Irish army as an officer cadet at the end of the second year. After I was commissioned and I’d finished my degree I was working on how to improve health and fitness in the Defence Forces.
