A County Roscommon pool player will hope to add the world title to the European crown he won back in February when he travels to Blackpool in England to compete in the World Pool Championships this weekend.

Cootehall native, Niall Sweeney, is part of the 10-man strong Irish team for the championships that take place between June 16th and 26th. The team are aiming to bring a first world title back to Ireland since 2011.

It will be a gruelling campaign with 17 matches against teams from all across the world, including Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, France, Belgium, Malta, India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Algeria, Mauritius, Morocco, Reunion Islands Portugal and Senegal.

Alongside the team event, competitors can also compete in the world doubles championships, singles and world masters events.

Sweeney was part of the Irish team that lost to eventual champions Northern Ireland in last year’s semi-finals in Morocco.

He will also compete in the latest series of the Ultimate Pool Tour, which also takes place this weekend. The Ultimate Series features the best amateurs from across the world, with the top eight in the rankings at the end of the season turning professional. Sweeney currently sits in 39th place.

The North Roscommon man play pool for the Cosy Bar in Castlerea and is very grateful for their sponsorship towards these events.
