Members and guests attended to watch the matches on an overcast day that saw sunshine and drizzle, but play was unaffected.
Adam Quinn once again managed to take top honours in the men’s singles and doubles, winning the singles for a third consecutive time.
Steven Giffney shared the doubles victory but missed out on singles glory against Adam in what turned out to be quite a competitive match, with the first set going to a tie-break.
In the ladies’ singles, Áine Teevan came out on top with Diana Nita losing out, but Diana had success by winning the ladies’ doubles with Daniela Merean and the mixed doubles alongside husband John Nita.
The plate and shield contests were also highly entertaining, taking place throughout the afternoon on courts one and two.
This year a table-tennis contest was held as part of the championship for the first time. While matches proceeded outside, the clubhouse hosted table-tennis matches during the breaks on court, and Stephen Storey beat Steven Giffney to secure the title.
Custom engraved trophies made by Aidan Hegarty were awarded to all winners and runners-up. The Dr. Nixon Perpetual trophies for the men’s and ladies’ singles and the Giffney Shoe trophies for the mixed, men’s and ladies’ doubles were also presented to the winners of each category. Thanks once again to Whelan’s Pharmacy for sponsoring the event and prizes this year.
Proceedings in Roland Garros were closely watched while refreshments and barbecue were served by committee members at the clubhouse. Much appreciation goes to everyone who helped to make the championship a success again this year ,and well done to everyone who competed in matches over the course of the six weeks.
