Curracloe United and Bridge Rovers were the finalists for a local derby following victories over Ballindaggin and New Ross respectively in the penultimate round.
In a tense match witnessed by a large crowd, there wasn’t much between the sides in the opening half.
Curracloe applied pressure through the opening period and broke the deadlock with a header from a corner from player of the match Maisie O’Leary after 20 minutes.
Curracloe’s defence of Erin Harding-Kenny and Lily Kelly continued to thwart the attack of Bridge Rovers in the form of Robyn Lillis, Michaela Goucher and Abi Murphy.
Meanwhile, at the other end Jocelyn Cash, Grace Carroll and Keely-Mai Byrne worked hard to break down the Bridge back three of Katie Ahearne, Ellie Murphy and Izzy Corrigan.
At half-time with the score still standing at 1-0, the game was in the balance, and some excellent work from goalkeeper Rebecca Hill for Bridge kept it that way as Curracloe attacked and Rovers countered.
Bridge were unlucky when a Robyn Lillis volley came off the post, while Grace Carroll came close at the other end.
Long shots from both sides proved unfruitful, and with the game still at 1-0, a mix-up in the Bridge defence gave Maisie O’Leary the chance to score from distance to make it 2-0.
This was an excellent sporting occasion where school friends and GAA team-mates put on a great show, and thanks to the league for organising a top venue and referee.
Congratulations to cup winners Curracloe who were deserved victors, and also to Bridge Rovers who received a second consecutive silver medal in the Wexford Schoolgirls Cup at this age group.
