Luke Byrne saved the day for Western Gaels and ensured Ciaran Breen’s charges got off to a winning start in the Lightning Protection Ireland Intermediate hurling championship when he drilled over a late free to earn a sweet victory over a battling Glenealy at Echelon Park Aughrim on Saturday evening.

Wicklow Senior hurling manager Jonathan ‘Bosco’ O’Neill looked to have earned the Reds a share of the spoils when he fired over a free just moments before, but a foul on Charlie Chamney allowed Luke Byrne the late chance to snatch victory.
