Gardai in Waterford are investigating a brawl at an underage hurling match in the county on Monday which led to the game being abandoned.
A mass brawl, allegedly involving players and spectators, broke out during the second half of an under-15 championship hurling match on Monday, forcing the game to be abandoned by the referee.
It’s understood at least one person was injured during the incident during the under-15 Division 1 Championship clash between Ballygunner and Na Risigh, with gardaí confirming they are investigating a reported assault.
“Gardaí are investigating a reported assault at a sportsground in Waterford city on Monday evening, July 15,” a spokesperson said. “Investigations are ongoing.”
The match, which was played at Mt Sion GAA Club, had to be abandoned in the second half. A spokesperson for Ballygunner GAA said the club was not commenting on the matter until or unless there is a referee’s report.
The referee has three days from the date of the match to provide an official report to the Waterford GAA Board, at which point the Board will consider the next course of action.
In a statement to local radio station WLR, Waterford GAA outlined that they are not currently in a position to address the matter.
