For the first time in 14 years, Dundalk bowed out of the FAI Cup at the first hurdle. Not since Brian Cash scored an 89th minute winner in what was the only goal of the game for St Patrick’s Athletic at Oriel Park in June 2010 have the Lilywhites exited the Cup at their first attempt. Friday’s game was the 13th time Dundalk and Drogheda have met in the Cup. The 2-1 defeat means Dundalk have still never won a Cup tie away to Drogheda – drawing in March 1981 and August 2011 and losing in January 1996, July 2004 and October 2013. They did win the two replays back at Oriel, however, following the draws in 1981 and 2011.
