‘Cork’s revival was what largely lent this year’s championship its special quality.’ Picture by Stephen McCarthy

I’ve just been on a journey. It’ll end today at the camogie final and began on the first Sunday in April when Cork played Limerick in the Munster Football Championship. En route, I had a ball and learned a bit about the GAA, Ireland and myself.

Twenty-one years ago I wrote a book called The Road To Croker about following the championships. This summer I went on the road again for the longest delayed sequel since Top Gun or, if you prefer, Dumb and Dumber. I travelled to Roscommon, to Portlaoise, to Killarney, to Cork, to Thurles, to Limerick, to Galway, to Dublin, bought tickets, stood on terraces, sat in stands.
