A tourist has been seriously injured in an accident involving a pony and trap at the world-famous Gap of Dunloe in Co Kerry.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene following the accident on Wednesday, August 14 at 12.50pm

The full details of the accident are not yet known but an investigation is underway. Gardaí confirmed that the accident involved a ‘horse drawn cart’ at the popular Kerry tourist site.

A female passenger (40s) was rushed to University Hospital Kerry for treatment for injuries believed to be serious but non-life-threatening, gardaí have confirmed.

No other injuries were reported at this time.

The Gap of Dunloe is visited every summer by thousands of tourists who take pony and trap trips through the valley.

In 2018, two American tourists were killed in a freak accident during a pony and trap trip at the Gap of Dunloe, which shocked the entire community.

Rosalyn Joy Few (64) and Normand Larose (62), died on only the second day of their Irish holiday, after the pony slipped, resulting in the animal, the trap and the tourists being catapulted into a ravine at the famous tourist location, their inquest in 2019 heard.
