Dramatic new changes for Dublin traffic could hang in the balance next week.
Members of Dublin City Council are due to meet tomorrow with Minister of State Emer Higgins to discuss a controversial new traffic plan which is due to be introduced in August.
The measures are aimed at restraining traffic flow through the city centre, with changes to traffic flows and bus gates on the quays.
Several business and retail groups in the capital are calling for the plan to be put on ice, over concerns about the potential impact on sales and jobs.
The City Centre Transport Plan would ban private cars on the north and south quays.
The first measures of the plan will restrict cars from Bachelor’s Walk and Aston Quay and were set to be brought in by early August.
Bus gates will be put in place on the quays for public transport use only.
Dublin City Council’s Executive Manager for Transport Brendan O’Brien said the aim is to enable growth within the pubic transport network.
He highlighted the main mode of transport in the capital was public transport, making up for 60 per cent of traffic.
During the monthly meeting in April, councillors heard over 3,000 responses from the public consultation were received.
O’Brien said most public transport users and car motorists backed the plan to restrict traffic.
Some people questioned how delivery vehicles would access premises, while others raised concerns about car access into the city centre.
Cllr. Darragh Moriarty, Labour Councillor in the South West Inner City, said the plan is to make the city centre “more welcoming for people to spend time in”.
