A man has been arrested after a taxi-driver was robbed at knifepoint in north Dublin this morning.

The suspect was detained a short time later during an operation involving members of the Armed Support Unit.

Gardaí were earlier alerted to reports of a robbery in the Poppintree area of Ballymun at around 1.30am.

A taxi driver said that he had brought a passenger to the area before the man threatened him with a knife.

During the robbery a sum of cash was stolen but the driver, who is aged in his 40s, was not physically harmed.

Investigating gardai quickly identified a suspect.

In a follow-up operation a man in his 20s was arrested at a property in the Ballymun area.

The operation was carried out by local uniformed gardaí, support by members of the Armed Support Unit.

A Garda spokesperson said: “He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda Station in the Dublin Region.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

The suspect can be questioned for a period of up to 24 hours before he must either be charged or released from custody pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
