DUBLIN, CA — A 57-year-old man died at Santa Rita Jail Tuesday, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Steve Addison, a former Oakland resident, was arrested by the Berkeley Police Department on Aug. 1 on charges of murder. He was taken into a therapeutic housing unit, a place for inmates who may pose a danger to themselves or others.

On Monday at around 1 a.m., a deputy conducting a routine observation check noticed that Addison was having difficulty breathing and speaking. The sheriff’s office said Addison had a history of “several chronic, serious illnesses.” Deputies and medical staff took him to the facility’s Trauma Room, and emergency medical services took him to a local hospital for treatment shortly after. Jail staff alerted his family.

His condition continued to decline at the hospital, and on Tuesday at around 1:40 p.m., staff informed deputies and Addison’s next of kin that he had passed away.

In August, inmate Abrion William McElmore was found dead in his cell. Two days later, another inmate at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond was found dead in their cell. Their name was not released.
