Marathonkids recently launched its 2024 programme at DCU Morton Stadium, welcoming over 8,000 5th and 6th class students from 150 schools across Fingal County Council, Dublin City Council, Waterford County Council, and Gaeltacht Regions.

Fingal County Council, partnering with Marathonkids Ireland for its 10th year, will have over 3,000 students from 30 schools across Fingal County participating in this year’s programme.

This 8-week initiative promotes exercise, health, and wellbeing, culminating in a final mile event at DCU Morton Stadium in Early November.

Marathonkids ambassador and two-time European Champion Olympian David Gillick joined local officials, including Deputy Mayor of Fingal John-Kingsley Onwumerah and Mary MacSweeney from Dublin City Council.

Deputy Mayor John-Kingsley Onwumerah said, “It’s fantastic to see Fingal County Council involved again this year.

“The Marathonkids programme has shown how inclusive it has been over the past 10 years, as it gives all primary school students the opportunity to participate and accomplish the goal of completing a marathon.”

“I am delighted to be the ambassador for the Marathonkids programme for another year,” said Gillick.

“Following the incredible successes of the Irish Athletics Olympic team, it’s more important than ever to inspire the next generation.

“The Marathonkids program encourages children to engage in athletics, motivating them to exercise regularly and learn about leading a healthy lifestyle. I’m excited to support teachers and schools in integrating health and sports education into their curriculum.”

Seán Ó Riain, Chairman of the Dublin Marathon, added, “Dublin Marathon is thrilled to support the Marathonkids programme once again in 2024.

“This initiative is a fantastic way to introduce young runners to the joys of running and jogging.

“With each passing year, the programme continues to grow and inspire the next generation of marathon enthusiasts.

“Our partnership with Marathonkids is a vital part of our commitment to community initiatives, helping to educate students about the importance of staying active and embracing a healthy lifestyle.”

The programme officially started in all participating schools on September 16th.
