Licovolt spins out of University College Dublin – Company formed following breakthrough scientific discovery in the battery recycling area

18/09/2024 – Scientists at University College Dublin have partnered with two industry executives to form a new company called Licovolt Limited. The business will be based at NovaUCD, one of Europe’s most active business incubation centers. Licovolt began as a funded lab research project following a chemical discovery by Prof. Tony Keene as his team of researchers.
The patented technology allows for the recycling of lithium cobalt batteries and the black mass material which is produced during that process at far lower temperatures than current industry norms and this can result in CO2 savings of over 70% as well as reducing the current 9 day process to just 4 hours.
The company is partnering with large recycling facilities, global electronics OEMs and auto manufacturers to support the circular economy and facilitate international policy and regulatory requirements around the recycling and shipping of critical rare earth materials such as Lithium and Cobalt and has launched a €5M Seed investment round in order to scale the company and advance the technology roadmap.
Clint Zahmel, a mining executive from Australia and cleantech entrepreneur and environmental engineer, Mark Connolly have both joined the Board of Licovolt to ensure the technology can be commercialized and scaled in industry. Prof. Tony Keene will act as Chief Scientific Officer and Prof. Steven Ferguson has been appointed as Chief Technology Officer.
