His Excellency Mr Tô Lâm, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam and President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam (above, centre), paid a visit today to Trinity College Dublin during his State visit to Ireland.
Mr Lâm was greeted at the Old Library of Trinity by Vice Provost Prof. Orla Sheils (above on left) and by Patrick O’Donovan, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (on right).
He then visited the Book of Kells Exhibition, where he signed the Visitors’ Book and viewed Ireland’s oldest harp.
Mr Lâm delivered a keynote speech on ‘A Vision for a New Era of Viet Nam – Ireland Partnership for Peace, Cooperation and International Development’ in Trinity’s historic Public Theatre to an audience that included Trinity students and researchers as well as a delegation of Vietnam’s key government officials.
This event, hosted by the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Asia Matters, concluded with a performance by organist Dr David Adams, Head of Early Music at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Dating back to 1684, the Public Theatre’s organ is Ireland’s oldest.
The visit builds on strong links between Trinity and Vietnam. As well as several joint research projects, Trinity currently has 29 registered students from Vietnam across Dental Technology, Digital Media, Pharmacy, Physics, Engineering and Computer Science.
