The 34-year-old man suffered a punctured lung in the incident on Talbot Street in Dublin’s north inner city.
The attack was the subject of a garda public appeal for information.
It is understood that the Dublin man was walking on Talbot Street shortly after 1am on Sunday when he encountered another group of people.
“According to information received by gardai he starting shouting at these people,” a source told the Irish Independent.
In the course of this altercation, the man was hit with a bottle which was thrown at him.
This caused a “freak injury” to the man who suffered a punctured lung from the bottle when he lifted his arm to protect his head.
It is understood he suffered considerable blood loss.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene and the man was rushed to the Mater Hospital where he required surgery for his injuries.
He was discharged from hospital late on Sunday night.
Initially there were concerns about the injuries the man suffered, but the indications are now that he should recover.
“He essentially bumped into the other group and it seems that very strong language was used by him and one of the other group decided to use a bottle to assault him,” the source said.
The incident was caught on CCTV and gardai are hopeful of making an arrest in the case which they described as a “serious assault.”
Sources say the assault victim is well known to gardai and has had multiple interactions with them.
In their appeal for information a garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault on Talbot Street, Dublin 1 in the early hours of Sunday, 6th October 2024. The incident occurred shortly after 1:00am.
“A technical examination of the scene has since been conducted. Investigations are ongoing.
“An Garda Síochána is appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.
“Any road users and pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from the Talbot Street area between 12:30am and 1:30am to make this footage available to Gardaí.
“Anyone with information regarding this assault is asked to contact Store Street Garda Station on 01 6668000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
Sunday morning’s incident is just the latest serious assault to happen in the Talbot Street area of the north inner city which made international headlines after the attack on American tourist Stephen Termini in July of last year.
Last month shock CCTV images showed a brutal brawl involving two gangs which took place in broad daylight and involved five men who punched and kicked each other as innocent bystanders and children watched on in horror.
In June it was announced that Dublin City Council invested €2.5 million into rejuvenating the Talbot Street area through maintenance works that were ongoing throughout the summer.
A spokesperson for the council said that despite Talbot Street being home to many historic businesses and transport hubs including Connolly Station and Busáras, the area has faced “many challenges in recent years”.
