A rumour circulated across Leinster House last Wednesday that Cobalt, the Oireachtas member revealed by The Sunday Times last weekend to have been recruited by Russian intelligence as an agent of influence, was about to reveal himself.

It was suggested that Cobalt was to make a statement and that he would be resigning their seat. Later it was suggested that Cobalt had been talked out of doing this. One politician, who confesses to being a huge fan of John le Carré, the feted author of postwar spy novels, was identified by several politicians who spoke to The Sunday Times this week as the source of this ultimately false rumour.
