Rat problems are on the rise with a sharp increase in callouts to pest control providers in Dublin and Cork in the past year.
Rentokil recorded a sharp increase in rat callouts in both Dublin (41pc) and Cork (100pc) in September this year compared to the same month last year.
Nationally, Rentokil recorded a 2.6pc increase in rat-related callouts across the country in September 2024 compared to September 2023.
According to Rentokil, rats are widely acknowledged as the country’s primary pest concern. They say it’s important to implement rodent-proofing solutions to prevent these creatures from infiltrating homes and business premises.
Signs of rat activity to be aware of include droppings, scratching noises and footprints.
Rats are regarded as the top pest threat as they can cause significant damage to buildings and assets.
Rats spend extended periods every day grinding down their teeth on surrounding objects. They can chew through utility lines, electrical wires, and other key infrastructure.
The presence of rats also pose a serious reputational risk and a health risk due to potential spread of diseases through their bodily fluids and excrement.
Rentokil are urging home and business owners to remain vigilant and take preventative measures against the growing threat posed by rats.
“Rentokil is encouraging home and business owners to be mindful of the presence of rats in their premises after a 2.6pc increase in rat callouts nationwide was observed,” Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager for Rentokil said.
“Both homeowners and businesses should remain vigilant against the growing threat of rats.
“With rats seeking refuge during the colder months, businesses especially need to fortify their defences to prevent structural damage and reputational harm.
