The NFL International Series could be expanding to Ireland in the future.
Catherine Martin, Ireland’s minister for tourism, culture, arts, Gaeltacht, sport, and media, told reporters Thursday that there’s a push to host an NFL game in Dublin.
“I would say it’s under active consideration,” Martin said, according to Ian Curran of the Irish Times. “I think we’ve seen the absolute benefit in real terms of the college football, so you can imagine what (an NFL game) would do.”
Potential sites for the game include Croke Park and Aviva Stadium, the latter of which hosted a college football matchup between Notre Dame and Navy in August 2023.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about the possibility of playing a game in Ireland ahead of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 6 tilt against the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
“I know the (Pittsburgh) Steelers really want to go there (Dublin),” Goodell said, according to BBC Sport. “I have no doubt we will be playing in Ireland. I don’t know if it’ll be next year but it’s coming soon.”
The NFL kicked off this season’s slate of international games with its first-ever regular-season matchup in Brazil – a game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers. The series will continue Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the New England Patriots at London’s Wembley Stadium.
