Gerard Hutch, the gangland criminal known as the Monk, has told associates he intends to contest the next general election in north Dublin.

The Sunday Times could not reach Hutch on Saturday but his associates, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he was giving “serious consideration” to running in Dublin Central, where Paschal Donohoe, the public expenditure minister, and Mary Lou McDonald, the Sinn Fein leader, are based.
It is unclear if Hutch is floating a Dail bid as a prank, but a local political source said: “It’s known locally that he’ll be running — he’s told a few people that this is what he was planning on doing.”
