The Irish Life Dublin Marathon is due to get under way this morning, with around 22,500 participants taking part.

A number of road closures and diversions are in place across the city and county to facilitate the running of the race and the public are being advised to allow more time for travel today as a result.

This is the 43rd running of the marathon in the capital with tens of thousands of participants taking to the streets to complete the gruelling 26-mile course.

Starting out at Leeson Street Lower at 8.40am this morning, the Irish Life Dublin Marathon will wind its way around the streets of Dublin before runners complete the course at Mount Street Upper.

Among the participants will be international athletes, wheelchair participants, charity runners and first timers.

74-year-old Colette O’Hagan from Co Louth will complete her 1,000th marathon today while actor Colin Farell will be running in honour of his friend Emma Fogarty, the longest surviving person with a rare skin condition known as EB.

Participants are expected to continue crossing the finish line up until 5pm this evening.

As a result, a large number road closures will be in place for most of the day and there will be disruptions to rail and bus services.
