It’s a sad day for Dublin fans as they witness another of the capital’s great players, James McCarthy hang up his boots.
Making his debut back in 2010 the Ballymun Kickhams player would be part of one of the most intense and successful periods of Dublin GAA, leaving with nine All-Ireland medals.
He captained the team when winning their last All-Ireland in 2023 but this year the star decided to step away from inter-county football, thanking his fans, his family and his wife, Clodagh.
James broke the news this week stating ‘I have decided to retire from representing Dublin GAA at inter-county level. This decision hasn’t been an easy one to make but it’s the right time.
‘It really has been some of the best days of my life and I have memories to last a lifetime…the loyalty and friendship we have built is something I will always be thankful for.’
Addressing his family and wife he said ‘To my parents John and Marian, my family, close friends and my wife Clodagh, thank you for supporting me throughout my football career. Your unwavering belief in me has helped more than you will ever know.’
In 2024 James and Clodagh welcomed their first child together; Conall Michael McCarthy was born on the weekend of the 25th of February.
The couple announced the news with EVOKE at last year’s All-Stars awards and that 2024 was going to be busy, with a new addition to the family.
