A 45-year-old Dublin man has pleaded guilty to assaulting Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman.

The man appeared before Judge David McHugh at Blanchardstown District Court, charged with the assault.

Karl Ronan, of Erris Square, Waterville in Blanchardstown, Dublin, was charged in connection with the incident, a Section 2 assault, on Saturday when the Minister was out canvassing in his local community.

He is also charged with using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or being reckless as to whether a breach of the peace might have been occasioned.

He is also charged with causing damage to property, namely a clipboard, belonging to Mr O’Gorman on the same occasion.

Garda Joseph Rogers gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

Defence solicitor Tertius van Eeden told Judge McHugh that his client was pleading guilty.

Karl Ronan was remanded on bail on his own bond of €100.

He was arrested at his home and made no reply to the charges at Blanchardstown Garda Station.

The arresting garda said a condition of bail should be that Karl Ronan does not make any comment about the case online. He must also have no contact with Roderic O’Gorman.

The court heard Karl Ronan would be applying for legal aid.

The case will be returned to Blanchardstown District Court on 17 December.
