The ­unpredictability of where the 174 seats will go in Election 2024 is summed up by the mixed picture in Dublin. The late Fianna Fáil minister Séamus Brennan, a renowned psephologist, used to call Dublin “the cockpit of any government” as a prospective taoiseach had to perform well there to take power.

The campaign will change the ­picture everywhere, but here’s how each race is shaping up in Dublin at the start.
