Republic of Ireland 1-0 Finland (Ferguson)
The Republic of Ireland also finished their most recent match triumphant, beating fellow strugglers Finland 1-0 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
Battling to avoid finishing bottom of the group and being demoted to the third tier, the Irish — who had already beaten Finland in Helsinki — wrapped up their second win of the group stage thanks to Evan Ferguson’s goal on the cusp of half-time.
The result confirms Finland’s relegation, and guarantees the Republic of Ireland will finish third regardless of today’s result: not going up, not going down.
But they could scupper England’s promotion chances, which will be motivation enough, even aside from the rivalry between the two countries!
