While Storm Ashley has passed, Met Éireann is predicting further wet and windy weather this week before a possible swing towards high pressure.

Their outlook says: “Turning unsettled with rain and showers, heavy at times. Possibly turning drier and more settled towards the end of the Bank Holiday Weekend.”

In its forecast for Tuesday evening, Met Éireann says it will be “dry with clear spells at first though it will turn cloudier from the southwest later, with a little patchy light drizzle following towards morning. Some mist and fog patches will develop too. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees generally in light to moderate southerly winds, fresher for western and northwestern coasts.

“A good deal of cloud tomorrow [Wednesday] with a few hazy sunny spells. Mainly dry too, though there will be some patchy light rain and drizzle in Atlantic coastal counties at times. Becoming breezier through the day with southerly winds gradually increasing fresh to strong and gusty. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees.

“A mild and cloudy night [Wednesday] with patchy light rain and drizzle for most but with more persistent rain likely developing for southwestern and western coastal areas. Temperatures not falling below 10 to 13 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds,” they added.

The forecast continues: “Rain in the west will become widespread through the morning and afternoon [on Thursday] with some heavy falls likely leading to some spot flooding. Highest temperatures generally ranging between 14 and 16 degrees. Moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds will ease light for a time before veering northwesterly and strengthening again.

“Rain, with further heavy falls likely, will become mostly confined to the eastern half of the country with clear spells and scattered showers developing further west [on Thursday night]. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees in moderate to fresh northwesterly winds.

“There’s some uncertainty in the timing but the rain in the east will clear through the day [on Friday] with sunny spells and showers following. Turning noticeably cooler with highest temperatures of just 9 to 13 degrees with moderate to fresh northwesterly winds.

“Current indications suggest that rain will track eastwards over the country during the morning [on Saturday] and early afternoon with sunny spells and just a few showers following. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in mostly moderate west or southwest winds.

“A good deal of uncertainty in the details at present but indications are that there will be further rain and showers but possibly turning drier during Sunday and Monday as high pressure to the south attempts to build,” they concluded.
