Travel chaos as ferry services between Dublin and Wales cancelled over Storm Darragh damage

A number of ferry services connecting Dublin to Wales have been cancelled due to damage sustained at the Welsh port from Storm Darragh.

A number of counties were put into a Status Red weather warning over the weekend as strong and gusty winds battered the country.

As many as 35,000 customers are still without electricity with an ESB Networks spokesperson confirming it will take up to a week for electricity in some areas to be restored.

Uisce Éireann crews are also continuing to work with around 40,000 customers having their water restored over the weekend.

FERRY CANCELLATIONS

The aftermath of the storm continues to be revealed with a number of ferry services between Dublin and Holyhead in Wales being cancelled on Monday morning.

Both Irish Ferries and Stena Line cancelled scheduled sailings between the ports as a result of damage sustained at Holyhead.

Irish Ferries confirmed they had cancelled both the James Joyce and Ulysses from Dublin to Holyhead and Holyhead to Dublin on Monday.

The services cancelled included the 2am James Joyce from Dublin to Holyhead and the 8.15pm Holyhead to Dublin James Joyce.

Of the eight services running from Dublin to Holyhead on Monday only one has yet to be cancelled, however, Irish Ferries have said the 8.55pm Ulysesses going from Dublin to Holyhead is ‘in doubt.’

The ferry service confirmed that the cancellations were due to ‘infrastructure weather damage in Holyhead.’

The company have shared updates across all their services with alternative sailings for all cancelled trips.

DELAYS

TII, the motorway operations control centre is warning of congestion on routes approaching Dublin on Monday morning as they also urged road users to be cautious of the heavy fog.

The M1 Southbound; M3 Southbound; M4 Eastbound and M7 Eastbound have all been reported to be hugely congested as commuters make their way into the capital.

TII added that there were delays on the M50 between J03 to J09 Southbound.

In Cork, commuters are being warned of delays on their journey as a result of a multi-vehicle collision between J3 Ballincollig (West) and J2 Ballincollig (Cork).

TII said: ‘Delays to your journey will occur. Consider a different journey route or start time.

‘When approaching the collision location, drive with caution, reduce your speed and obey instructions from emergency services.’

IRISH RAIL

Irish Rail have warned that service delays are ‘expected’ as as technical issue impacts the IT systems in Central Traffic Control on Monday morning.

A statement from the train service warned that live departure time information was unavailable online and on some platform displays.

DART/ Northern/ Maynooth/ Docklands and Phoenix Park Tunnel commuter services were set to experience delays of approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
