The ice on Thorndike Lake in Dublin is still a work in progress as a local dog found out the hard way Sunday morning.
A call came into Dublin Fire and EMS at 10:46 that a dog had wandered out onto the ice and fallen through.
“It was about 500 feet off shore,” said Dublin Chief Tom Vanderbilt, who added that Dublin Police were first on the scene.
Vanderbilt said that the dive team responded in exposure suits and an inflatable craft.
“It looks like a banana boat,” said Vanderbilt, adding that mutual aid also answered the call but thankfully was not needed.
The dive team rescued the dog which was taken to an area vet and went home with its owner. Vanderbilt said that returning to the station an hour after the call underscored the positive outcome.
The owner’s name was not made available, but Vanderbilt suggested that it was a local dog who was familiar with the lake and has perhaps explored it previously when the ice was stronger.
“The dog doesn’t know any better, but humans do,” said Vanderbilt about venturing into ice this season. “Unless you see six inches of clear ice under your feet, don’t.”
