Similar Incidents
Last week, A Qatar Airways (QR) flight from Doha (DOH) to Auckland (AKL) diverted to the Maldives on Friday, December 6, 2024, due to a technical issue. The flight QR920 experienced an unexpected landing at Velana International Airport in Male, leaving passengers stranded for over 12 hours.
Airline staff worked to arrange a replacement aircraft, but the prolonged delay created considerable frustration among travelers. Passengers reported receiving inconsistent information from Qatar Airways personnel about the nature of the stoppage, with some initially being told it was a “normal stopover” and part of a “pilot flight” initiative.
These mixed messages escalated tensions, and some passengers were forced to sleep on the airport floor, with one family member describing the treatment as lacking “dignity”. The replacement aircraft eventually departed approximately one hour behind the original schedule, with an estimated arrival in Auckland around 9:45 pm Saturday.
In an official statement, a Qatar Airways spokesperson expressed regret for the delay and confirmed ongoing efforts to assist passengers and ensure smooth onward connections to their final destinations.
Similarly, this month Air New Zealand’s (NZ) flight from Wellington (WLG) to Sydney (SYD) diverted to Auckland Airport (AKL) on December 1, 2024, due to an issue with one of the aircraft’s engines.
The flag carrier operates daily flights between Wellington and Sydney using its Airbus A320 fleet. The affected flight was scheduled to depart Wellington just before 3 pm, but shortly after takeoff, the aircraft abruptly altered its flight path, as indicated by flight tracking data.
The unexpected route change signaled a potential operational problem, prompting the diversion to Auckland Airport.
