“Despite our very best efforts, including extensive contingency planning, we are deeply regretful to inform you that the first performance of Mary Poppins at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on Wednesday, 11 December 2024, at 19:30 is cancelled.”
Musical fans were left disappointed after the opening night of Mary Poppins at Dublin’s Bord Gais Energy Theatre was cancelled at the last minute.
The theatre confirmed the disappointing news today, saying there had been “repeated delays” with parts of the set being shipped in from the UK due to Storm Darragh.
The musical based off of P L Travers’ novel – and the Disney movie of the same name – was set to open tonight and run until January 11, 2025.
Tonight’s performance has been rescheduled for Sunday evening and all other performances of the show are “as it stands” scheduled to go ahead as planned.
Bord Gais Energy Theatre explained that anyone who can’t attend Sunday’s rescheduled show is entitled to a full refund.
In a statement, the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre said: “Due to the impact of Storm Darragh, there have been repeated delays with large parts of the Mary Poppins set being shipped from the UK to Dublin. The situation was further worsened by the subsequent closure of Holyhead, making it impossible to deliver the set on time.”
“Despite our very best efforts, including extensive contingency planning, we are deeply regretful to inform you that the first performance of Mary Poppins at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on Wednesday, 11 December 2024, at 19:30 is cancelled.”
“To accommodate the audience affected, we have gone to great lengths to minimise disruption by scheduling an additional performance on Sunday, 15 December, at 18:30. All tickets for the original date will remain valid, and patrons will retain the same seats they originally booked. For those unable to attend the rescheduled date, a full refund or exchange ( subject to availability) will be offered.”
“Bord Gáis Energy Theatre sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment caused by this situation. Every effort was made to ensure the show would proceed as planned, and this decision was not made lightly. We deeply appreciate your patience and understanding during these exceptional circumstances.”
“As it stands, all future performances of Mary Poppins at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre will go ahead as scheduled.”
