As freezing temperatures grip Ireland, Tiglin has called on the government to safeguard rough sleepers and those seeking international protection from life-threatening sub-zero conditions.

The charity has called on the government to prioritise “proactive planning over reactive measures”, to ensure that no individual has to choose between life-threatening conditions and inadequate shelter.

Despite existing measures outlined in the government’s Cold Weather Strategy, some people are still choosing to sleep rough, making them highly vulnerable, the charity has said.

Although the charity commended aspects of the Cold Weather Strategy, it stated that prioritising additional beds in cold weather times only highlights “poor planning”.

“Bed provision should not be dictated by weather, it should be dictated by demand,” the charity has stated.

“Latest figures from the Department of Housing show over 15,000 individuals in emergency accommodation, with more sleeping rough.”

Tiglin helps people overcome addiction, homelessness and other life-controlling issues

In a statement, it underscored how the situation is particularly acute for individuals seeking international protection, many of whom are not acclimatised to Irish winter weather, culture and how to navigate survival in a new country.

“As temperatures plummet, lives are at stake. Rough sleepers and asylum seekers are not just battling the cold—they are fighting for survival,” said Aubrey McCarthy Chairman of Tiglin.

“Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow warning as -5C is forecast and has highlighted concerns for motorists and animals during this time.

“Let us not forget the homeless, the unhoused during this high-risk time’”

The public has been advised to report to their local authority if they are concerned for anyone who is sleeping rough.

Dubliners can use the ‘Dublin Rough Sleeper App’ to notify the relevant authorities of the location of the individual of concern.
