Temperatures are set to drop significantly across the country with spells of -11C in some parts.

And as the country braces for the horror chill Met Eireann issued a new “threat to life” alert this morning.

Dublin remains under a Status Yellow snow and ice warning until 12pm today while a Status Yellow Low temperature warning remains in place until 6am on Friday.

On Wednesday a Status Orange warning will kick in for Leinster, including Dublin, from 8pm until 11am on Thursday.

Met Eireann warn of: “Extremely cold with widespread severe frost, ice and lying snow.”

And dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delays and animal welfare issues are also major concerns.

This warning also extends to Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, Connacht.

Meanwhile the warning will kick in for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster and Connacht from 8pm tonight.

As Dublin prepares for the orange alert, temperatures today will sit between just 1C and 4C.

It will be “a very cold day” with the chance of isolated wintry showers despite sunny intervals throughout the day.

And while Dublin may have escaped the Orange warning for tonight, temperatures are still set to plummet drastically.

The overnight temperatures are set to sit between -5C to -3C with severe frost and icy patches.

And freezing fog looks set to develop amid variable breezes.

Tomorrow will stay mostly dry across the capital with that frost, ice and freezing fog lingering throughout the day.

Temperatures just above freezing at 1C to 4C again with sunny spells.

BIG DROP

As those more severe weather warnings come into play temperatures will plummet across the county.

Wednesday night is set to see “extremely cold” conditions in Dublin, with Met Eireann warning that temperatures will plunge between -8C and -2C in just hours.

And Met Eireann warn while these are general temperatures, locally there could be even more of a plummet with some weather experts predicting -11C spells.

And lingering dangerous conditions are expected Thursday morning in the form of ice, frost and freezing fog.

Scattered winter showers are expected although, these will become more isolated throughout the day replaced instead by forming cloud.

Freezing daytime temperatures of -2C are possible throughout Dublin city and county on Thursday.

SNOWFALL LOOMING

And as Dubliners face into another bitterly cold night on Thursday Met Eireann are warning snow could be set to fall over The Big Smoke.

Some small amounts have hit the capital thus far but nowhere near the scale seen in some Munster and further down Leinster counties.

They warned: “Dry at first with freezing fog developing. However, cloud will continue to build from the southwest overnight as a band of rain follows over the southwestern half of the country with falls of sleet and snow initially before quickly transitioning to snow.

“Further north and east it will stay mostly dry. Lowest temperatures of -7C to -2C generally before turning milder from the southwest.

“Winds will become easterly and increase mostly light to moderate by morning.”

And continued sleet and snow falls still possible throughout the day Friday on higher ground but temperatures will be up to a slightly milder 1C to 5C.
