As the impact of the new playing rules being introduced to Gaelic football was being parsed and analysed late last year, Noel McCaffrey recalled being stopped in his tracks when reading of one particular consequence flagged that is likely to emanate – how players may need to be 10 to 20pc fitter than they currently are to sustain the ‘new game’.

Depressing, thought McCaffrey, the former Dublin football footballer and father of multiple All-Ireland winners Jack and Sarah.
