A manhunt has been launched after a prisoner who was a patient in a Dublin hospital managed to escape.
The prisoner, who was reportedly on remand in Wheatfield Prison for assault causing harm, was escorted by prison officials to Tallaght Hospital on Saturday morning (January 11).
It is understood that the prisoner was able to evade the prison escorts and fled the hospital, with the Irish Prison Services investigating all of the circumstances surrounding his escape.
‘The Irish Prison Service can confirm that a prisoner has escaped from lawful custody while on escort to Tallaght Hospital this morning,’ a statement from the Irish Prison Service said.
‘An Garda Síochána were notified immediately and provided with all the relevant information in relation to the prisoner. The Irish Prison Service is currently investigating the circumstances of the escape.’
In a statement, gardaí said: ‘Gardaí in Tallaght were alerted to a prisoner who absconded from a local hospital while receiving medical attention in the early hours of this morning Saturday January 11 2025.
‘The man (aged in his 40’s) remains at large and investigations are ongoing.
‘An Garda Síochána is aware of the matter and is liaising with the Irish Prison Service.’
