In June, an off-duty Air Canada (AC) pilot took swift action to safely land a flight when one of its on-duty pilots became incapacitated.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) reported that the incident occurred on June 7 during a 2,115 km flight from Toronto to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Midway through the domestic flight, the first officer experienced a medical emergency, creating an urgent situation in the cockpit.

An off-duty Air Canada captain, traveling as a passenger to a new assignment, immediately stepped in to assume the incapacitated pilot’s duties. The experienced pilot successfully guided the aircraft to a safe landing, securing the well-being of all passengers and crew.

Upon arrival, emergency medical services met the aircraft at the gate, providing prompt medical attention to the affected crew member. The TSB noted that quick intervention by the off-duty pilot played a crucial role in ensuring a safe outcome for the flight.
