Power companies hit by huge rise in consumer debt, as write-offs soar
One of the country’s biggest energy providers has seen a massive spike in customers’ bad debts in a sign the inflation that hammered households and businesses over the past two years has left a legacy of economic scarring, despite various support schemes.
Accounts for SSE Airtricity – the Irish arm of the UK’s SSE group – show the amount of debt on its books more than 60 days past due soared to £18.3m (€21.5m) at the end of March, up from £11m a year earlier.
