Gardaí investigating the death of a woman in a hit-and-run in Co Limerick are appealing to the public for information.

The woman was hit by a Ford silver-coloured transit van at Bank Place in Rathkeale shortly after midday yesterday.

The driver failed to remain at the scene to offer assistance to the injured woman, or to alert emergency services for help.

She was later admitted to hospital where she died.

The 22-year-old has been named locally as Marguerita Sheridan who was the mother of a young child born last month.

It is understood Ms Sheridan was attempting to close a large set of gates leading into a yard at a house on Bank Place at the time.

She was pronounced dead at University Hospital Limerick last night.

Tributes have been paid to her on social media, expressing profound sadness at her death.

Gardaí carried out a technical examination of the location yesterday.
