Our thanks and appreciation to Brefini O Rourke who tackled the terraced area with skill and gusto with a range of equipment to ensure that this area is returned to the production of oats and straw.A local historic thatched cottage will hopefully be re-thatched using a traditional native material with the skills of a thatcher returning the cottage to it’s former glory. We are happy that Brefini has come on board and is another member of the farming community to assist in improving our local landscape for the benefit of all.

STAMULLEN

Local Elections

This coming Friday June 7th is the date set for the voting of the Local and European Elections. I don’t think that there have been as many election posters on show across the village and parish of Stamullen since the foundation of the State just over 100 years ago.

Every pole, telegraph, electric, lamp-posts, and the sides of buildings, etc. are crammed with election candidate hopefuls; promises, promises and more promises of what they are going to do for you and your neighbourhood/community if and when they may be elected. One promise that many people are certainly going to hold each candidate to account for will be the removal of the election posters in the aftermath of Friday`s elections, resulting in a cleaner environment as we progress into the last of the summer months of 2024.

Incidentally, the last local Councillor that we had who was also a native of Stamullen Parish was the great Pat “Red” Collier of Kilbreckstown. Pat was voted in by the local electorate during the 1967 Local Elections which took place that year on June 28th. Of course, the “Red Lad”, as he was better known, went on that year to become a renowned figure across the entire country and beyond in association with the Gaelic Athletic Association when he was a formidable player with the great Meath Team of 1967 when the `Royals` went on to claim the Sam Maguire Trophy by winning the All Ireland Football Final on September 24th 1967 by defeating Cork by 1-09 to 09 points.

Devils Bread

At this particular time of the year during late May and throughout the month of June a magnificent wild flower may be seen growing along the grass verges on the smaller country roads.

This particular wild flower stands over 1½ metres tall, with a tall green stem and contains a white coloured flower-head. It`s real name is that of Hemlock and it was always locally called `Devil`s Bread` by the communities in the past. Although it is a beautiful wild flower and blends especially well against the wonderful greenish/brown hedgerows, this wild flower is also highly poisonous and it is best to admire from a distance and try to avoid touching the plant. If you do happen to lay your hands on it for whatever reason, make sure that you wash your hands afterwards; it highly toxic.

Some local Authorities cut back this wild flower at this time of the year and, at places such as road junctions and sweeping bad corners on rural roads etc. it can also hinder the motorist`s view in many cases and this yet another reason that vehicles should take that little bit more care at this time of the year when this wild flower is in its full growth, making the already small country roads look even smaller and narrower.

Whether you admire or dislike the Hemlock wild flower, just be careful not to touch and if you do, wash your hands afterwards.

Know Your Parish

The following advert appeared in the pages of the Drogheda Independent Newspaper back in the month of September in 1899.

` For sale. About 150 Larch, 325 Scotch, 275 Spruce, 55 Ash, 50 Elm, 80 Oak and 85 various, in all, about 1,050 trees. Terms: To be cut down by the purchaser and removed within a specified time. No timber to be removed until all the purchase money is paid. Timber may be seen and fuller particulars obtained on personal applications to Mr A Watt, Gormanston, or by letter to Viscount Gormanston`.

The above-mentioned `Mr. A. Watt`, was a loyal servant of the Gormanston Household. He was originally from Ayrshire in Scotland and, along with his wife; they both served three consecutive generations of the Preston family at Gormanston Castle.

Both Mr. Watt and his wife are interred in Stamullen cemetery, their grave-plot being marked by a fine headstone which was erected by the 15th Viscount Gormanston in the first decade of the 20th century and overlooks the road leading into Stamullen village.
