A man accused of attempting to abduct a child from a party at an apartment complex in Dublin has been named as Visak Rajesh Leela.

Reporting restrictions placed on the identity of the accused were lifted by Mr. Justice Alan Mitchell this afternoon.

As Gript previously reported, District Court Judge Gerard Jones granted an application put before the court by a member of An Garda Síochána that Leela not be named due to “the current climate in the country”.

A previous sitting of Cloverhill District Court heard that the child is not known to Leela.

Michale Kelleher acting as defence for the accused argued that the publication of the address of the accused might lead to a safety concern for both the accused and other resident at his address.

Mr Justice Mitchell reserved his decision on the publication of the address of the accused pending his consideration of a bail application.

The application to remove reporting restrictions in respect of the accused’s identity and address was made on behalf of a number of media companies including RTÉ, Independent News and Media, The Sun, Sunday World, and Daily Mail among others.

Leela is accused of attempting to unlawfully take or detain a child under 16 years of age contrary to section 16 of the non fatal offences against the person act 1997.
