The death has occurred of Cork football great Kevin Kehily after a long illness.
The Newcestown clubman, 74, won three Munster SFC titles during a long and distinguished Cork senior career that stretched from 1969 to 1984.
He missed out on Cork’s 1973 All-Ireland triumph, having stepped away from the team to focus on his studies that year.
But his defensive qualities were recognised towards the latter end of his career when he claimed two All-Stars – at full-back in 1980 and corner-back in ’82.
In a glittering underage career with Cork, Kehily had earlier won All-Ireland medals at minor (1967) and Under-21 (1970).
A dual player at club level, he claimed two Cork SFC titles with divisional side Carbery. He also contributed to Cork’s hurling success in the seventies, as physical trainer of the team that went on to achieve All-Ireland three-in-a-row glory between ’76 and ’78.
Tributes have flowed in from many quarters, including Carbery who tweeted: “To Kevin’s family, his club Newcestown and his many friends throughout Cork and Carbery GAA, we express our deepest condolences.”
