The sharpened knives are out across South Derry’s great footballing enclaves. Last September, when the shock news broke that Tyrone man Mickey Harte was to be appointed Derry football manager, no shortage of Derry supporters took their position in the long grass and waited.
Never able or willing to accept Mickey as one of their own, Derry’s recent downfall has given them the air to vent their pent-up frustrations. The bars and clubrooms of Dungiven, Bellaghy and Loup are in a state of rage and disbelief, as Derry’s All-Ireland ambitions lay in ruins. Only one man will be to blame.
