DOWN forward Oisin Savage suffered a broken jaw during Sunday’s Tailteann Cup semi-final victory over Sligo.
Silence fell on Croke Park late in the second half of normal time when the 21-year-old landed heavily following a robust challenge from Sligo’s Nathan Mullen, who was subsequently shown a red card by referee Derek O’Mahoney.
Savage was treated by medics for seven minutes before being stretchered from the field. He spent the night in hospital, and is expected to undergo surgery as soon as possible.
That injury rules the Loughinisland man out of Down’s Tailteann Cup final date with Laois on July 13, while he faces a race against time to be back for the start of his club’s Down championship campaign in August.
Despite losing Savage – who had only come on as a substitute for Ryan Johnston six minutes earlier – the Mournemen managed to battle back and snatch a draw, before finishing off the Yeatsmen after extra-time.
