Oisín Savage of Down is helped off the pitch on a medical cart during the Tailteann Cup semi-final match between Sligo and Down at Croke Park in Dublin

Oisín Savage will undergo surgery on a broken jaw tomorrow, which is also his 21st birthday, with the Down forward set to miss the Tailteann Cup final against Laois next month having been stretchered off in yesterday’s epic victory over Sligo.

There was a six-minute delay in the semi-final as Savage was attended to by medics following a nasty incident which saw Sligo defender Nathan Mullen receive a straight red card from Tipperary referee Derek O’Mahoney.

Savage was conscious leaving Croke Park before being transported to Beaumont Hospital for scans and his club Loughinisland provided an update on his well-being this afternoon.

“Good news in that our Oisin is on his way home from Dublin. Not so good news is that he will be up for surgery on his broken jaw tomorrow,” the Loughinisland club said in a Facebook post.

“Tomorrow also happens to be his 21st birthday. Thank you to everyone in Down GAA, Croke Park and all the medics for looking after him so well.

“Also thank you to everyone who has sent well wishes to Oisin and his family. Speedy recovery Oisin and we will keep the 21st celebrations on hold.”
