Dublin Airport cafes sold tea/coffee every 12 seconds

Dublin Airport’s cafes served up more than 2.5 million cups of tea and coffee during 2024 to passengers – equating to a cup of tea or coffee being poured at the airport every 12 seconds.

New figures from airport operator daa also reveal that the bars in Dublin Airport sold more than 1.5 million pints of Guinness this year to passengers.

Meanwhile, Dublin Airport passengers ate a full Irish breakfast every minute on average during the year daa.

The top-selling crisp sold in the airport this year was Tayto, with more than 500,000 packets sold over the past 12 months.

When it comes to chocolate, Toblerone is the favourite of passengers, with a total of 72 tonnes of Toblerone sold this year – the equivalent of 72 family cars.

Dublin Airport will be 85 years old in January and when it first opened in 1940, it was built to accommodate 100,000 passengers per year. The daa said that more than 171 days this year have seen more than 100,000 passengers move through the airport.

Earlier this month, daa confirmed it was submitting an application seeking to increase the passenger cap at Dublin Airport to 36 million a year.

Dublin Airport currently has a passenger cap of 32 million a year, which was put in place as part of planning permission for the second terminal in 2007.

A total of 1.4 million passengers were set to travel through Dublin Airport this Christmas, around 90,000 fewer passengers on last year due to the passenger cap.

The daa also said today that almost 19,000 items were handed in to Dublin Airport’s lost and found department in 2024, while 56% of the items handed in were returned to the owner.

The item most commonly in the terminals and surrounding campus was luggage with more than 2,300 bags handed in. More than 1,000 mobile phones were also handed in, as well as 750 sets of keys.

Another commonly misplaced item in the airport during 2024 were laptops, with more than 550 recovered this year.

A total of 550 wedding and engagement rings were also handed in to the airport’s lost and found department this year. More than 100 of those rings remain unclaimed, including many engagement rings, daa said.
