Dublin Bus is to expand its 24-hour and Nitelink services during the Christmas period.

The company’s current ten 24-hour routes from the city, including the 41 services to Dublin Airport will be enhanced by a further 45 bus departures spread out over several nights in the run-up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Six extra Nitelink services will be added to the typical Friday and Saturday schedule.

The extra dates in December are Thursday 12, Thursday 19, Sunday 22, Monday 23, Monday 30 and Tuesday 31.

Dublin Bus said the expansion will increase capacity by nearly 50,000 over the period.

In a statement, Dublin Bus Director of Service Operations Gwen Morgan said: “We have been working hard with the National Transport Authority (NTA) to really focus in on the best routes and times to help get people home from Dublin on these nights.”

It comes as Iarnród Éireann announced last week there will be an extended timetable in place for DART and commuter services over Christmas.

The extended service will operate every Thursday to Saturday before Christmas and on New Year’s Eve.

There will be additional services leaving from Dublin Pearse at 12.30am and 1.30am which will serve all stations to Howth.

In the other direction, there will additional DART services leaving Dublin Connolly at 12.35am and 1.35am which will serve all stations to Greystones.

The additional commuter Western line services will depart Dublin Pearse at 12.20am and 2.05am and serve all stations to Maynooth.

There will also be trains leaving Dublin Pearse at 11.55pm and 1.58am that will serve all stations to Drumcondra and will then stop at all stations from ParkWest to Kildare.

The additional services to Dundalk will leave Dublin Pearse at 12.40am and 1.40am from Dublin Pearse and will stop at Tara Street, Dublin Connolly and then service all stations from Howth Junction to Dundalk.

The Luas will also have additional services on Friday and Saturday nights before Christmas and also on New Year’s Eve.

The additional services on both Red and Greens line services will run between 1am and 3am.
