Hot chocolates are always a hit at this time of year, but one Dublin café is struggling to keep up with demand for their version – the Marshmallow Bomb.
Marshmallows and hot chocolate are an iconic duo, but the Marshmallow Bomb takes it a step further.
Roots, on Drury Street, serves their hot chocolate with a toasted marshmallow fluff covering the top. You can dip a spoon inside to release a gooey and chocolatey centre – the perfect hand warming tool on a winter’s day.
Thanks to a number of viral videos, Dave Meehan, owner of Roots, said they’re now selling hundreds of Marshmallow Bombs – which cost €5.50 – a day.
“We have been going fluffing crazy in here for the last month and it’s been amazing,” he said.
“The Marshmallow Bomb was first introduced by 320 Ice-Cream Lab. That was the ice cream shop that existed here before Roots and SpiltMilk.
“We rebranded and gave 320 Ice-Cream a bit of a tummy tuck, a facelift, and fresh life.
“We said we would bring back the Marshmallow Bomb for winter. We put an extra bit of love into the homemade ganache. I had to reteach myself how to make the fluff again.
“Everything is made in-house, from the marshmallow fluff to the ganache. We really stand up behind that product.
“There has been five or six viral videos and I’m so grateful, it’s just nearly trying to keep up with the demand at the moment.
“The hype is for the homemade marshmallow fluff on top. We make that downstairs in the kitchen; it is not easy to make. It’s not like a meringue.
“It’s a very sensitive thing to work with and if you came in to try it yourself, you’ll see it’s just nice and light and sweet on top of your chocolate ganache, which is that bit richer, but also airy.
“It’s been a hit and it’s been amazing. We’re definitely in the hundreds at the moment, every day when it comes to selling them,” he added.
